Over the last five years each branch of government, after hearing stake holders rant and rave, responded with
aggressive measures to protect Hawai‘i’s environment. The County and State protected the shoreline by taking a tough stand on setbacks and the obstruction of coastal areas, and The Federal government designated the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands as a marine national monument. On July 31, 2010 this area, now known as Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument, and beginning just 155 miles north of Kaua‘i, was named to the United Nations’ World Heritage List. Recognized as a Unesco World Heritage Site, this 140,000 square mile area is quite simply magic! According to the Environment News Service, “It is one of the largest marine protected areas in the world with features such as seamounts, submerged banks and lagoons. The monument contains about 70% of the coral reefs in U.S. territory and is inhabited by endangered monk seals and 7,000 marine species, a quarter of which are found only in Hawai‘i. The entire area is off-limits to fishing.”

While this newsletter seeks to report on Kaua‘i real estate trends and data, we also recognize the interface between sales and the long lasting value derived from preserving an authentic experience. In a down market it is easy to lose sight of the long term benefits of preservation. One only needs to look at the Gulf Coast for a reminder of why.
